i need to connect to a friends computer (he is about 1km away from me)
we need to have access to each others files
i wish to know how this can be done using the phone line and dial-up modems at both ends.
i.e. a direct dialing connection
please help
both machines are running win xp pro

Well, its not a good idea to VPN over dialup, you can try, but its not a good idea.

Download an FTP app and a client for your friend, and try that one, you only need his IP address and thats it.

I think he's asking for a peer to peer link using only the modem's (i.e, no telco, modem's physically connect to eachother)
I don't think you can do this w/o an FXS to provide a dial tone...I'm not really sure
I think a better solution would be to use an adhoc WLAN network w/ a directional antenna, saves you the trouble of running wires, throughput is higher, and I'll bet it'd be cheaper. Or go w/ fiber, LX can supposedly do 1km w/ no problem

you could do this with a telephone line simulator and 1 Km of wire. The brand of telephone simulator I recommend is called Skutch.
