Can anyone help me I need to connect two computers together, they both have Windows 2000 Professional. I just want to be able to share files. I have two Network cards and a CAT-5 cable connecting them together, I got a networking working when we had Windows 98, but I upgraded and it isnt working now.
HelpCid

You'll probably need a crossover cable and you might need to create user name/password used to sign in on each computer as a second user. Make sure the netowork domain (192.168...) and subnet is the same, enable sharing. Ping to make sure they can talk, then find the other PC doing a search, or look in network neighborhood for hte other pc.

Make sure the CAT-5 cable you are using to connect the 2 computers is a crossover cable.
There are many ways to do this but the following is based on TCP/IP. You can assign each computer a non-routable IP address and enable sharing. For example,
Computer 1 - IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Computer 2 - IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0Assuming you have File and Printer Sharing service installed, you can right click on folder(s) you want to share and select 'Sharing' option to setup sharing.

I did all that already..
On 192.168.0.1 (mine) i can see the other comp, and mine, but when i try to access it, it says it cannot find it. On 192.168.0.2 the other it only has its folder on there.
They cannot ping each other, i have checked all my tcp/ip settings and they are the name on both the computers. It is a crossover cable.Any more help?

Yes, I have added 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks'
In Local Area Connection in Network and Dial-up Connections. I have installed.Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
NETBEUI ProtocolCOMP 1
(in TCP/IP Properties)
*IP: 192.168.0.1
*Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0COMP 2
(in TCP/IP Properties)
*IP: 192.168.0.2
*Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0Below those there is DNS server addresses, do i need to fill them in?

No, leave DNS server addresses blank. You won't need them for this setup.
Everything you configured for TCP/IP looks correct....
Have you tried maybe resorting to the alternative NETBEUI to communicate?

I have run through the windows troubleshooter, that didnt really help. But I know i can't check the routing between the computers through the command 'tracert'
just says 'Request Timed Out'.Does this help?

Cid, same problem here trying to connect 2 pcs with win2k pro. I have a crossover cable, IPs set statically as yours, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, they can't ping each other. I don't have any firewalls installed. Don't know what the heck is going on with those bloody windows!
Somebody help.!!!

wasnt it supposed to be easier to network than windows 98, because it took me a day at least to do a network between to 98 systems. This I have been going at for 2 weeks.

same problem.... i have one pc with w2k othere with w2003 server. i cant ping other comp from one. but can get reply from loopback. i am using crossovercable.... here is one more thing... in status of LAN connection i can see packets on both the ends... but that is agian no help in ping....
just found out im not alone....

Do you have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in the WINS tab in Network properties?
You could try the very good site, http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp
The free online tutorial helped me connect two Windows 2000 pcs with a crossover cat6 cable.
