Hi,
We currently have two PEER TO PEER networks, ALL USE WINDOWS XP.
LAN@Location1 is here and has internet access
LAN2@Location2 is 20 miles away and has internet accessBoth locations have linksys routers
I want to connect LAN@Location1 and LAN2@Location2 across the internet so they become all one big LAN.
like this:
(Lan1)--router---/internet/---router2--(Lan2)
In other words I want to double click on "my network places" and see all the computers at both locations as ONE NETWORK
money for equipment is not a problem, I just need to know --
HOW DO I DO THIS?
what routers do I need to buy?
???????????? PLEASE HELP

leased lines are hellish expensive though, it would be cheaper to set up a VPN connection between the two sites.

Yep, a VPN would be the most cost effective way to go, but it would require having an internet connection in both locations.

which xwardos has. question is does his routers support vpns. if not new routers are required.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

The problem is the router. We fool cisco's by not putting ip address on each end point of the wan. You may not be able to do that.
As above the common solution is some type of vpn so that your path is transparent across the wan.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Almost any soho router can support vpn pass-through. Only a few can act as a vpn agent or portal. It is easy to setup a mnodest linux/bsd/solaris vpn solution if your existing windows doesn't support vpn servers.

If you are not a linux guru or want to spend the time on additional server hardware to create a vpn between sites, consider any number of hardware solutions from Cisco, Sonicwall or Wothers. They can do the vpn connection between them and you only have two points to configure instead of 4 [2 passthru vpn routers and 2 vpn servers]
