How can I configure a laptop using a wireless router to print to a network printer. Someone said to ping it to see if I am communicating with it, but I don't know how to do that. They also said that the ip address and subnet mask needs to be the same, but I don't know that either. Can you help me?

If the printer is connected to another computer on the network, Make sure printer sharing is enabled in all computers. The printer drivers needs to be installed on all computers using the network printer. So, use the add printer wizzard in control panel to add the printer to the wireless notebook. If you are using a print server you must install the print server drivers on all computers and install the printers.
