Can anyone point to a guide to connecting my old HP m700 to the net, I have ADSL on this desk top, do I just plug the laptop into the modem?

The guide would be from your ISP. Many offer a setup program that may or may not work. They do know the settings that are required. All offer some sort of how to page or faq or tech access.
For the most part you need some way to connect via a login name and password. That could be in the modem, your laptop (or even a soho router if you were to purchase one). The other issue is IP settings. There are plenty of ways to do that too.
