CPU/Ram: Pent 4/ 1012

We have a laptop running vista,and have set up a modem router which connects to PC via LAN. Cannot get laptop and pc to recognise each other to enable file/ settings sharing, would be grateful for any pointers, I think we've tried the obvious.
Thank you
PS Internet connection is fine on both machines

If you try to do file sharing on XP home, then you can only do simple file sharing.

Here are some additional file sharing helps on Vista:
