Subject: Computers cant see eachother!
Comment:
I am new to networking, and i succesfully connected some wires to a hub and to a computer, i had a roadrunner technician install the rest when he was installing my cable. After reformatting (with an unfortunate encounter with a trojan) the network dusnt work anymore. We are in the same workgroup and both have file and printing sharing on, but we cant see eachother. I have a folder shared on my comp, but the other comp ddoesnt. Still i cant see my comp from the other comp. Im wondering if this may be because the usb port is still open, i have no idea i am only 14 years old. We have internet wire connecting to the hub, and then both computers are connected to the hub also. BOTH OF OUR INTERNETS WORK. I am confused of my mind.

it sounds like your network settings aren't right. Did you load TCP/IP?

Well... You have TCP/IP bound to a dial up adapter to get your internet communication, but TCP/IP bound to your Network adapter for network comm. These are two separate things. If you are using TCP/IP as your network protocol then make sure the computers are on the same network ID. ie 128.108.0.1 and 128.108.0.2 both with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. With these numbers both your computers would be on the 128.108.0 network with individual host ID's of 1 and 2 respectively. (Forgive me this is very simplified!) If this still doesn't work then try to use NetBEUI as your network protocol instead of TCP/IP. This is a pretty much fool-proof protocol and if it doesn't work then something else is wrong. Make sure you share out a folder on a recongnized partition. No NTFS partitions for a Win98 machine to see!

I have no idea what u just said...

Check out www.helmig.com
This website will show you everything you need to know about networking and the windows operating system.
Good Luck

As Jonas suggests, go through it all with Helmig, and get the basic network running again. Once you have that OK then concentrate on the ICS/cable-modem sharing isses. (ICS = Internet Connections Sharing).
Helmig covers it to some degree; Tim higgins does it - possibly in more detail at:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com
specifically -
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/sharing.htm
is where you'll find the DSL and cablemodem sections.
When you do get it all working, you'll know a lot that's useful for the future, and be able to help others too...
Good luck.

I don't think it will work because the cable modem would be making both your PC's have public internet IP Addresses. Most newer cable modems (if not all) implement DOCSIS 1.1 (pretty sure) whichprevent Microsoft filesharing from going over the internet, which is good or people would be getting r00ted every day. I would use the setup I have and end up saving $15 dollars a month if you are using a service like mine, Roadrunner.
I have 2 NICs in one PC...the cable modem on one (public, internet IP Address) and one on my LAN which shares the connection, using Microsoft ICS, to the rest of my LAN. My whole LAN has local addresses from ICS that are 192.168.0.xxx.BTW - I am only 15, started networking at 11. One day, I hope to get mega $$$ from my experience. Good Luck.
Big D
