Subject: Computer can't connect to LAN w/o iOS: Windows XP HomeCPU/Ram: P4 3.0GHz/512Mb |
Comment: My computer won't connect to my LAN when the router is not connected to the interent. I'm using a DSL 2wire home portal to connect to the internet through a router. But, every time I try to use the LAN without the 2wire being connected to the router, my computer can't connect to the LAN. The other computers in my house are still connected the the LAN after I unplug the internet. Eventually, I got my computer to find an IP address offline, but the computers in the workgroup weren't visable. My computer seemed to be connected, but it couldn't see any of the other computers. I think the problem is when my computer tries to recieve an IP address from the LAN through 2wire but can't when the internet is unpluged. Well, actually, I have no idea whatsoever. Please help me... again.

Reply: (edit)The IP Address was assigned by 'DHCP' when online. Online: 172.16.1.35 Offline: 192.168.0.2 Microsoft tech support had me manually enter my private IP address. I entered it in the internet protocol (TCI/IP) properties. My computer won't recieve any information from the computer offline. It won't work with Windows firewall on or off. Thank you.

Reply: (edit)You need to setup your router properly from the sounds of it. Try accessing the router setup from your web browser (you'll need to know it's IP address). Once in the setup, disable DHCP (on the internal interface only) if you're going to use a statically assigned IP address. You'll want to make sure that the windows firewall is off and ICS is also disabled. Make sure the router is statically assigned an IP in the same range as your PC on it's internal interface and receiving it's IP from your ISP via DHCP.

Reply: (edit)yes, don't add a static IP address to your computer. the static IP address should be in the router! you should be able to use the router as a DHCP server for your local network though. tim tim eveleigh tim@timeveleigh.co.uk work: http://www.evinsol.co.uk personal: http://www.timeveleigh.co.uk

Reply: (edit)or maybe not... After I restarted my computer the problem came back. Again, this problem occors when the router is not connected to the 2wire DSL. First off, I'm back to getting a IP address assigned to me for the router. When my computer recieves the IP address, the connection tells me it has limited or no connectivity. Yet I can access all the network folders and printers, at least for 10-20 seconds. Then it tries to reset the connection for about 2 minutes where it finds the same IP address and tells me there is limited or no connectivity. Also, when I get the IP address, I'm also assigned a subnet mask, but no default gateway. I have Windows firewall still on, and I'm not sure what ICS is. I'm also not sure whether DHCP is enabled or disabled anymore.
