I have 2 computers one with Win Me, the other with 98se. I had them networked before, then for other reasons I took it apart. Both computers can see each other, but I can't ping from eather one. I can share files and stuff, but when I try to play a game with them it wont work. File and printer sharing is turned on on both computers. They are hooked up with a cross over, no hub. They both have the same NIC.
This is what I have listed in the network config. tab:

-Client for Microsoft networks
-Dial-up adapter
-Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter(NIC)
-Network TeleSystemsP.P.P.o.E. Adapter
-Ti ADSL LAN Adapter
-(4 IPX/SPX protocols for the above)
-(4 NetBEUI for the above)
-NETBIOS support for IPX/SPX- PROTOCOL
-(4 TCP/IP for the above)
-File and printer sharing for microsoft networks

F.Y.I. The computer listed about (win Me) has a aDSL modem built in.

The 2nd computer has the following:

-Client for Microsoft networks
-Dial-up adapter
-Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter(NIC)
-HP EN1207D-TXPCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
-(3 IPX/SPX protocols for the above)
-(3 NetBEUI for the above)
-NETBIOS support for IPX/SPX- PROTOCOL
-(3 TCP/IP for the above)
-File and printer sharing for microsoft networks

I hope I gave you what you need to try to help,

Josh

The computers probably talk to eachother over either NetBui or IPX/SPX. The fact that you can't ping proves that TCP/IP is not working properly! Your games probably need tcp/ip so they won't work. Try uninstalling all protocols you don't need (just overhead) and then configure tcp/ip again until that works. Then you can add ipx and netbeui again.

sounds like an IP address problem- what are the addresses- look on tcp/ip properties.

A touch back on what sander was saying, remove the protocols that are bound to the different interfaces you dont need.. for instance u dont need netbeui running on your dsl modem its only listening IP,
On the iP config side u will only need to configure a good ip and mask
machineA 10.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0
machineB 10.1.1.11 netmask 255.255.255.0

reboot dem winders and u good to go..

Ok, one more question...when I get it up and working.....would I still need to put the others back in, or would just having the tcp/ip do the job?

Thanks again :)

Just use TCP/IP as the protocol. If you need any assistance with setting up TCP/IP look at the Home Networking link at www.techtony.com
