I have recently run a network wire (8 Wire Straightthrough) to my Dell Dimension 2400 and it won't connect to my DSL modem/router combo. It is a Westell Versalink Model 327W. I have tried going back to Network defaults by reinstalling my OS but that didn't help. It DOES work through a slower way which is routing the wire through a 10 MBPS ethernet hub but I wol like to connect directly so I can 1) go faster and 2) free up one more plug. Any ideas?

What does ipconfig show when you're connected directly to the modem? Have you reset the modem? Can you access the modem configuration when connected to it physically?

Thank's for replying!
ipconfig when directly connected to the modem:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.166.113
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :I have reset the modem several times and have also tried two different ones (same model and brand).
I cannot access anything while connected directly, just indirectly.
Also, in the network adapter's properties, on the advanced tab, Media Type says Auto, although it works directly if you put it on 10 Mb Half Duplex.

The 169 indicates the computer isn't being assigned an IP address (just in case you didn't know that.) When you have the computer connected directly, is the hub connected also? I have the same modem/router. Since there are 4 ethernet ports on the this modem, perhaps one doesn't have the option of using a hub AND connecting three other wired devices. I'm no expert on this, but it seems logical to me that you can't have it both ways.
I would remove the hub and physically connect. Then release and renew your IP on your desktop and see if that works.

I have tried physically connecting and renewing ip address, and that is when it doesn't work. (I didn't know about the 169). Connecting directly works when I go to the NIC properties and clcking advanced, clicking Media type, and clicking one of the 10 MB settings. I have tried switching ports, and that didn't work. I have two other computers that use the router at the same time, and I have tried removing them but that didn't work. The hub ONLY connects the computer that doesn't work to the router. When I connect the computer directly, the hub is removed from the hookup. When the hub is connected, the others computers work still.
I hope this gives you enough info to help solve my problem! Any more needed?
