I have two machines connected through a hub and sharing an internet connection. Both are running WinXP.
The problem is, neither machines can see the other through the workgroup.
Both are in the same workgroup.
Both have files shared.
Both can ping each other through their IP addressess, but not comp names.
NetBios is on default.
They have firewalls, but disabling them didn't help.
I've tried rebooting.What the heck is wrong?

I got the same problem - One running XP and the other win2k.
what is more, they can ping each other by computer name as well as their IP.
Same question goes: what the heck is wrong?

Correction from the first post.
They are two machines connected to the internet through a hub. I don't know if that counts as "sharing" an internet connection.

hi,
have you enabled "Client for Mircosoft Network" and "File and Printer sharing for Mircosoft Network"? (they are under "Local Area Connection Properties")
pls kindly let me know this fix yr problem or not.
thanks in advance & all the best!Kaks

In my experience, a revisit to the Network Setup Wizard on all networked PCs is time well spent. Complete all steps, including running the Nwsetup floppy, even when running the same OS.

Yah "Client for Mircosoft Network" and "File and Printer sharing for Mircosoft Network are already enabled. Yet I cant see the other pc under the network neighberhood icon.

Ok. I've reconfigured my network and brought in a wireless router. There are still two machines. Comp 1 is connected to the router through and ethernet cable, and Comp 2 is on wireless.
Both computers are still in the same workgroup, and can still ping each other. Client for MS ntwks and file and printer sharing are installed.
Comp 1 still can't see Comp 2, but now Comp 2 is able to see Comp 1 but is unable to access it. I get this message "\\Comp1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this resource..... The network path was not found"

One last thing - Have you made resources on both PCs shared? This is a must have condition for them to see each other. I assumed you had, but you know what they say about assumptions.

I'm having a similar network problem. I have three computers networked together with a router...two are ethernet and one is wireless. The wireless computer (WinXP) used to be able to see the other two computers under Entire Network in Windows Explorer. Now it doesn't see them. The mapped Network drive is still there and I can access one of the other computers.
The WinXP computer is new. I've been installing new stuff and deleting applications that came with it. How can I get back to being able to see the other computers under Entire Network?

Hi,
The problem you chaps are having is that your pc's have no way of translating the IP addresses into hostnames. There are a number of ways that you can do this eg: host-files, NIS, WINS, DNS; and you can also combine most of these together, your options are probably confined to host-files, given that you have not mentioned having any servers on your LAN.
To implement this you should disable DHCP on your router and then set each client pc with a static IP address, something like this would suffice:
192.168.0.1 -> router
192.168.0.101 -> comp1
192.168.0.102 -> comp2,Make sure that if you do set-up static IP's on your pc's that you set their gateway address to that of the router (192.168.0.1 in my example).
Then on each pc you should add a new entry to the hosts file - this is (usually) located: C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc
and is a simple text file that you may edit with notepad.On comp1 add this to the bottom of the file:
192.168.0.102 comp2And on comp2 add this:
192.168.0.101 comp1Your pc's will now be able to resolve their hostnames to the IP addresses.
Rgds,
-Damien

I don't think it's a DHCP problem and not being able to resolve host names. I can ping one of the other machines using its hostname.
I previously had mine network working properly. Something has changed and I can't use Windows Explorer to see anything. I haven't changed from using DNS.
