Is it possible to split a Comcast Cable, prior to connecting to a TV box, and installing an additional modem, to use a PC in the family room. There is a modem installed in the home office already. Comcast says I need an additional line to my house for yhe additional modem. Is this just a revenue ploy for Comcast?

You must be phrasing your question wrong to them because I use both tv and internet in my house. They just put a splitter on and one line goes to my tv and one to my internet modem. I only pay for one line.

If you want to have multiple computers on your cable modem, you simply need a router.

I have Comcast cable TV and Comcast Internet services.

They both come into my house on the same line.

The cable comes into the house and was split by Comcast. One end goes to my TV/s (I don't use their cable boxes) and the other has a filter attached to it by Comcast.

The filter allows it to use the signal on the multiband line in order to use the internet band.

The filtered line then goes to my (personally owned) Comcast Motorola Cable Modem. From the Comcast modem it is connected to my Router/NAT device. From the router it goes to my two PC's NICs.

The monthly billing includes a charge for the cable television service and another charge for the internet service (~80/mo total cost).

So, If I am reading your post correctly then you are trying to access the internet using only the cable television service.
The second line that they are refferring to is the split with the filter on it making the second line. That second line would actually be inside of your dwelling. They may also be refferring to the second line as in a second service.

Doing it any other way would be illegal in their eyes.

I have the same setup but Comcast removed my filter and said I didn't need it. I have the single line into my Cable box outside then it has the dual splitter branching one to TV cable (which goes to another splitter in the same box then goes to different rooms in the house). The other goes directly to the cable modem.

I think what "D Atkinson" is asking is if he can add another cable modem in the mix.

I would say not without paying an additional cost because when you added the first cable modem you had to connect to Comcast’s local server and register the mac address of the modem with them so the second cable modem would not work without registering it with them first.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I guess I'm screw by the cable company. Think I'll invest in a more powerful router, which would be cheaper in the long run

That must be one big house if you can not run a wire from the current modem to the family room.

Have you considered using a wireless router from the cable companies modem to connect both PCs from the single line? One by wire and the other wirelessly.
