I am trying to network my Toshiba Satellite 1110 notebook (op system win xp home) to a HP desktop computer running windows 98SE. Upon recovering the initial software for the notebook from the recovery disc, adding the Realtek network adapter from Add hardware wizard in Control Panel and loading the "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family NDIS 5.1 version 5.503.326.2002" driver, the Realtek adapter displays a code 10 error in device manager. The latest version of bios and driver are loaded. I called the Toshiba call centre but the person on the line was quite willing but unable to help. I will follow this up further with Toshiba if necessary but any quick insights into this problem will be a great help. Note: I am unable to ascertain whether the network adapter in the notebook is a card or on the motherboard (assuming that matters) hence not sure whether some articles about code 10 error on the microsoft knowledge base site are applicable to this problem as they refer to cards. I tried out the registry editing tips on the microsoft knowledgebase but that does not fix the problem. Many thanks in advance for your time and any assistance.

I doubt that this will help at all, but RealTek has new drivers out for their chip sets. Version 5.606.811.2003 that fix a number of minor problems. They have 42k download for XP at realtek.com.tw for v 6.06.
Best guess is that the error 10 is indicating the adapter is not working or the wrong driver installed. Have you gone through all of the CMOS BIOS Setup options and made sure the Ethernet adapter is enabled in BIOS and set to use defaults. Also enable the "Reset Configuration Data" for Plug&Plan PnP/PCI Configuration, in CMOS Setup to clear old Plug and Play setting.
Summary: Pretty vague. Sounds to me like an incorrect driver. What OS are you running? What is the make and model of the nic? We need more details. Usually code 10 means the device cannot start for some reason...
Summary: Just something I missed: THE ERROR MESSAGE is something like: "device not working or drivers not installed correctly (code 10)" and it is displayed in the windows' loading (start up) and within Device...
Summary: I bought Dlink DFE 650 but I have installed all the necessary drivers for it and it has a yellow exclamation mark beside it. I tried removing the card and putting back in but it didnt work.I also trie...
