Reply: (edit)Ok, I'm assuming you're doing this all because you want to learn 2003 and the Active Directory environment. (any other reason wouldn't make a whole lot of sense....one does not torture oneself for entertainment purposes) Having said that.... Before you run dcpromo and promote the server to a domain controller you must first ensure your server has a Static IP address. You must enter the server's own IP address in the DNS field of it's TCP/IP settings. Then, run dcpromo and let it setup your DNS while doing the AD integration. DO NOT try to setup DNS yourself first. DNS is integral to AD and if the server is not pointing at itself for DNS when the first reboot is done after AD integration you'll have problems. Also, if DNS isn't setup properly you won't be able to login from clients properly or join client PC's to the domain. When joining client PC's to the domain you want to do that in System Properties >> Computer Name Tab >> Network button

Reply: (edit)With 98 clients you need to install the dsclient software on them to make them work in an AD environment before joining them to an AD integrated domain. Other than that, you are correct about adding a 98 client.
