Hi all
Just wondering if someone can talk me through what might be wrong: I have a WIFI network running in my house, and set up two laptops to connect to the internet (and each other) through a Linksys modem-router. Now I have a friend staying with a wireless enabled laptop who can connect to the Linksys network, but can't view any webpages or download email. I'm feeling very stupid this evening - could someone suggest what I might need to do to his machine to ensure he can view the web? I have a feeling it is to do with IP addresses - his machine is set up to Assign IP addresses automatically. All help very gratefully received. Thanks
Jeremy

Well, what operating system is this???
You also have to have Windows set to obtain the DNS servers automatically. If he can ping any IP address out on the internet but cannot ping www.yahoo.com then it is a DNS issue. Do a ping from a working computer to www.yahoo.com and it will display the IP address like this example:
Pinging www.yahoo.akadns.net [68.142.226.55] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 68.142.226.55: bytes=32 time=85ms TTL=49
Reply from 68.142.226.55: bytes=32 time=84ms TTL=49
Reply from 68.142.226.55: bytes=32 time=82ms TTL=48
Reply from 68.142.226.55: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=48Ping statistics for 68.142.226.55:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 80ms, Maximum = 85ms, Average = 82ms
Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.
