Subject: Client autodials, is this right? |
Comment: Hi, I just set up a home network using a small hub. Host machine running W98SE with ICS (56k external modem) and client running ME. Everything works fine, sharing, printing etc...but.. ;-> If the host is running and the modem is switched on, booting the client results in it autodialling to the Internet. It's not really a problem, net sharing works fine and both machines can browse effectively;to prevent it happening I only have to switch the modem off. What I'd appreciate knowing is whether this is correct, what _is_ accessing the net (no programmes are launched on the client)and if it's not as things should be, how do I stop it? BTW, nothing is set to automatically dial in on either machine and there are no programmes/utilities in the "startup" folders. Any help appreciated. TIA.

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem running SE. The clients could dial up and the 'Host' didn't even show me that they were connected. Under ME this was fixed. Selecting 'Never Dial a connection' in IE might stop it. My method was to turn off the external modem. Also they client can't close the connection, so this could cost a fortune in call charges.

Reply: (edit)Aha! Found it. Digging in ME I found that dssagent.exe was running. A search revealed it to be a "spyware" application reporting back to Mattel Software. Helpfully, they've held their hands up to this and there is a remove utility on their site. With that gone the network runs perfectly and I can now dial in from the client machine when _I_ want to :-) Further searching uncovered some utilites to drop the connection at the client but, as Lucky Eddie states, not the host. Still, so long as the constant polling has stopped, closing the client will return full resource to my beleagured 56k modem! Thanks for any and all head scratching folks. Regards.
