I'm working on an assignment for my cisco networking class. I have to design a Class B ip addressing scheme and I'm not sure where to begin. Here's the assignment:

Variable length subnet Masking Case Study

Company something.com has expanded and has applied for and recieved thwe class B address 134.40.0.0/16. The company CEO has hired you to create the IP addressing scheme. After examination you have found the following facts about the company:

1. The company has a central office in RI as well as a main office. The central office needs 12 IP addresses.

2. The company has main offices located in 11 additional states.

3. Each state office has two hundred (200) local establishments.

4. Each local establishment has a maximum of 10 cash registers and one (1) computer each needing an IP address for end of day accounting purposes.

Design the IP addressing scheme to provide for these conditions with maximum efficiency to routing advertisments between main offices and the central office. All internet traffic will be filtered through the central office.

So I understand the whole point of this assignment is to impliment the use of submasking (duh)but I'm just not sure where to begin or how to properly get this all down on paper. Any help would be great. ThAnks!

That is very easy, there is nothing to put down on paper.. you have to answer one question before you can solve this ? this is no wrong answer here, you need to figure out two things after you answer the one question? then you should be able to figure out the answer

Here is an article that may help you. It is about setting up a network on a Debian (Linux) server, but it gives a good amount of detail with exactly what you are looking for. In fact there seemed to be more information about networks and how to set them up with the proper masks and such than there was information specific about Linux!. There are also some examples that should help.

I'm not looking for an answer to this question without doing the work myself. I'm just looking for clarity on where to start i.e. the steps I should take to solve this problem.
My professor is one of those who reads the slides the text book manufacturer gives you and doesn't elaborate any further. i'm left trying to figure it out on my own already. There's nothing wrong with asking for help.

Read the questions what is the first thing you need to ask yourself? here... before you can even solve this problem?

1.) How many ?????????? / ??????????? do you need.

OK I think I'm getting this. I think I figured that in all I need 26,424 total ip addresses for the host portion. 12 for the central office, 1 for each state(12 states' main offices). Each state has 200 establishments which is an additional 2400 ips needed plus 26,400 (each (2400 of them)establishment needs 11 for equipment)

As far as organizing all of that... Do I need 12 subnets then? 1 for each coming out of the central office? Do I need more than that to accomidate each establishment branching out of each main office or can they just be on the same network as thier main office?

I found a table of available subnet masks for class B addressing schemes:

And just a side question here... what does /16 mean at the end of the network address 134.40.0.0?

the /16 means a mask of 255(8 bits) + 255(8 bits).0.0 8+8+0+0=16.. it's the default mask for a class B addresses.

your on the right track here, figure out either how many Subnets/or Hosts you need, that is what I was try to tell you but did not want to give the answer.

one scenerio i've put together is to have 25 subnets. 1 for the central office, 1 for each of the 12 main offices, and another subnet for each main office which is used for each main offices 200 establishments.

The subnet mask for that would be 255.255.248.0

That allows for a max of 32 subnets with 2048 hosts per network.

Does this sound like a good setup?

How are we defining an establishment? is it Subnet? how many subnets do we need here? in this problem?

Here is the answer
Say that 16 bits are being used, subnet mask is 255.255.0.0
Closest block range to suit this company is to use the fomula
2^4 -2= 14

subnet is now 255.255.240.0

block size 16 First valid subnet 134.40.1.0
First valid ip address 134.40.1.1
Last valid ip address 134.40.15.254
Last valid subnet is 134.40.15.0 Broadcast for this subnet is 134.40.15.255
