I would open a case with Cisco , it's sounds like a bad router.

Or maybe you may need to re-load the IOS, do you have a TFTP server on your computer

I would download an IOS from CISCO website, you need to have access to the IOS download area? can you log into there system? You need to download the right IOS, if you install the wrong one you will have problems for sure.

hhmmmm...i think this going to be a toughie. I don't have access to the IOS download area, I also contacted Cisco TAC, as I don't have a Contact number i'm a bit stuck with support. Do they not have a public server for downloading the IOS software?

Cheers.

Can't he interupt the boot sequence (Ctrl C) and disable the NVRAM image from loading during bootup and then load an new image from a flash card, assuming it's a software problem (corrupt image) and not based in hardware.

How old/new is the router? It's probably time to return to Cisco as defective. If you can't redirect the bootup process and get a new copy of the IOS installed then you are probably wasting your time with this unit.

He download the the wrong IOS and install the wrong one too.

You can get by doing a password recovery and enter a hex number to bypass the boot-up seq

also

by doing a #erase flash will remove the IOS and now you can work in the ROM mode.

I think your right, i am wasting my time with this. I haven't downloaded or installed any IOS at the moment (as it won't let me!), this is a 3yr old 2501 router which was lying around in our store room.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone eith a contract number. so i think i'm stuffed!

Thanks for you help, it was appreciated.

PC.

Funny you should ask. We had the identical problem last week and there is no way to load a new IOS or change the password because the router won't respond to anything. Break, CTRL-C, nothing would interrupt boot up. Fortunately we had maintenance on it and Cisco came up with a resolution - they replaced the thing. I think you may be SOL but 2501s are fairly cheap these days - you may be able to have it repaired at a depot other than Cisco for a bit less.

I'm not sure what caused our problem but it was probably our fault - we use it for testing and training.
