Hi everyone. We one a cisco router that and outside company installed and that no one knows the password to get access it. I basically need to get into it so I can shut off some ports. Some of our staff is using software to do file share on our network. And with DMCA and all that is going on I do not want to take a risk. Apperantly there is a password to everything on this router including console. So I have to use the break method using the cable that came with it which some how they manage to salvage before thowing the entire box away. I'm sure the password was in there aswell. Anyways, I read articles from Cisco website about breaking into it and issuing new passwords. But my main concern is, will this reset everything to it's default settings? I don't want to wipe out everything, just change the passwords to console, secrete, etc. Any suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated.

Cisco routers run on a form of unix.
You will be able to hack into it but it will be very hard.
How inportany is the settings??
Anyway, I would surgest that you have a look at unix hacking.
I have been told that cisco routers are a kind of unix.Sorry I could not be of more help

Break into the router and change password DOES NOT wipe out your config. For sure it will shut down all interfaces. Once your break in and change password, all you need to do is to do a NO SHUT on the interfaces you want to bring them up. Hopefully it helps.
