Is there any software available for "chatting" on my 3 networked computers that do not require logging onto the internet first?? i would really like to be able to send my daughter a message without having to be online

Windows XP comes with Message Server active. As you know the IP address of the units on your LAN, you should be able to send her popup messages. Look for information on using XP's message server.
