Changing the physical address on PPP adapter

June 24, 2009 at 10:30:56
Specs: Windows XP
We are using Toughbook CF-19's with Sierra
Wireless MC5725 to connect. I have begun
using Faronics Deep Freeze Enterprise to lock
them down. The Deep Freeze administration
console uses the MAC address of the remote
computer to differentiate machines. Windows
XP appears to always use 00-53-45-00-00-00
for this virtual adapter. Anyone know
how to change this so each machine has a
unique physical address on the PPP/SLIP
adapter? I already tried MAC
spoofing tools like SMAC, Macshift and the
like with no success.

xp does not assign mac addresses. They are burned into the nic by the manufacturer. You can go into advanced properties of the nic and make your own mac but I would advise against that since your assessment is in error.

Thanks for that clever response, Wanderer. I am trying to alter
the physical address on a virtual PPP adapter, like those used by XP to connect to cellular data networks, not a physical NIC.
Anyone else?

Glad you enjoyed it.

Have you tried searching the registry for that mac address?
Finding it should allow you to change it.
