I have my old PC hooked up to my wireless router with an Ethernet cable and my new laptop with wireless capabilities using wireless to connect to the internet. I'd like to network both to transfer a lot of files from my old computer to my new. I tried it but in the File and Setting Transfer box that Windows has, it crosses out a home network as a possibility and I've read that it means the subnet's are different. Is there any way to fix this so I can send files through the network? Any ways where I don't have to spend any money would be great.

Are both PC's getting their IP from DHCP on the router?

To check each machines IP address open a command prompt window and type the following command:

ipconfig /all

Compare. Are they in the same subnet?

Under DHCP in my router, it says both PC's are using dynamic DHCP. For my computer I'm getting 255.255.255.255 and for my laptop I'm getting 255.255.255.0.

I was able to change the subnet mask to match on my old PC by changing my DNS settings to automatic and release/renewing with ipconfig. But it still says I can't transfer files with a network.

have you tried setting up a shared folder on your laptop?

Please respond after you have solved your problem to notify who helped you and what solved the problem. Both sides benefit when you do.
