We need to know what OS you and your friend are using and you need to make sure your using a crossover cable. I saw your last post and I don't know if that is a crossover cable or not. Some crossover cables will say it on the cable somewhere.

Then you will need to network the two machines. Since I don't know what OS's you have here are some basics things you need to check.

Both computers have different names.

File and Print sharing on both computers.

Both computers in the same workgroup.

Make sure both computers have different IP addresses.

Both computers in the same subnet.

Folder(s) is shared on both with no restrictions or have the correct permissions set.

Make sure you can ping both computers.

Here is a web site that will give you step by step instructions.

you need to be in the same IP address domain, be in the same subnet, have different computer names, and be in the same workgroup i.e.

you have IP address 192.168.0.1/24 name:john
your friend has IP 192.168.0.2/24 name:josh
you're both in the same workgroup, name:mshome

run the setup wizard and you should have it working.
