Kind of a trick question since a cross-over cable would be "regular" Cat5. The difference is wether the cables are wired to be strait-through or cross-over.

XP has nothing to do with this, it is a function of ethernet 802.x design.
If one or both of your nic adapters are somewhat new they will most likely be able to auto negotiate for the correct cable. The transmitt and receive side connectors will be electronically changed to match the cable. A patch will do in this case.
How do you tell?
You plug a patch cable in and try it. If it doesn't work then consider a trip to get a cross over cable.
