I know networks use CAT 5 cables, but somewhere I heard that CAT 3 is a good second choice. I already have my house wired with CAT 3, and I really don't want to rewire it! Can I use CAT 3 wires with my standard home network (Windows)?

Cat 3 will only support a 10 MB network with any reliability, if you want 100 MB then you would need/want Cat 5.

CAT 3 is what we use for our Meridian Phone system here at work. I am sure it is possible to run maybe a 10mb network on CAT 3, however I have never heard of that. Networking Standard is CAT 5.
