Im trying to network 2 computers peer to peer using NICs and a crossover cable. The host is a win 98 OS and the client is a Xp based OS. I can share docs but i cant use the net on the client. The client provided an automatic IP ,( i dont know if i can use this for the net ) , and when i ping the client from the host , it works. However, when i try to ping the host it says that the destination is unreachable. When i try to look at winipcfg on the client ( XP) it does not come up and i get this wierd mes. Is it possible to share the internet over a cable modem ?! If so how do i go about doing this ?! i was told to use a proxy server. I tried using analogx but it says to change my ip address to something else on both computers. Wont i loose connection if i change my ip on the host ?!

OK.....

junk the IP's that you have.

Which PC has the 2 NIC's and is doing the internet sharing? If its the windows 98 PC then yes you need to use a proxy. Change your internal IP to something like 10.1.1.1, Subnet 255.255.255.0, NO GATEWAY, NO DNS. Reboot. Set your IP on the other PC to DHCP, no gateway, no DNS. reboot. Download and install Sygate Home Network. Its free for 30 days. Install the server part on the PC doing the sharing. (dont install the client part.... Never used it yet.) The setup is easy. Just tell it you want it to control DHCP. Pick your internal card and you external card. ..... and BANG your surfin.

The internal IP is the one that is inside you r home network.

The external IP is one you use to access the internet (the one give to you by your ISP

For the XP check your network conection. set it up to Obtain an IP address automaticly.

A very helpful site for all kinds of windows systems may be this one in case you want to use free Microsoft 'ICS' for Internetsharing:

Hi Omar,

On the Win98 (host) PC you should use two instances of tcp/ip. One for the ip address supplied by your ISP, the other for internetworking between the twp PC's.

Yes, use a proxy server to establish internet sharing. I use ProxyPlus which I downloaded from the internet.

Quote: "The client provided an
automatic IP ,( i dont know if i can use this for the net )." The client should not be set up to get a dynamically assigned ip address. Normally that happens when a network has a router with a DHCP feature for the client (XP in this case).

Try using 192.168.x.x as your addresses. Post back with your results.
