cant share files over network

Trying to share files over a network .My desktop is connected directly to the netgear wireless cable modem CG814WGv2.the laptop is connected thru 54Mbps wireless usb 2.0 adapter.I am able to get on internet with both computers.I ran network setupwiz on both added them both to workgroups. on folders choose share files over network. the solutions say to give permissions by right clicking on folders and enable thru the security tab however i dont have this tab on either one of these computers. i can find the computers by their computer name however cannot access folders, the message says network path not found any step by step solution would be greatly appreciated.
