so I don't know jack when it comes to networking.. I just got a laptop and I want to transfer a lot of junk over to it.. my desktop is winXP pro and my laptop is media center. I have a 4 port hub laying around so I hooked that up and got the 'limited or no connectivity' on the laptop.. internet won't work.. but is fine on the desktop.. I try setting the IP, gateway.. and crap manually.. I just copied over all the info from my desktop and then changed the ip addy by 2 points.. the 'no connectivity' went away.. but it still didn't work.
I noticed that with the hub the network was only running on 10mbps.. I have 2 cat5 slots on my destop so I modded one of my cat5 cables into a crossover and ran the laptop through the desktop... I figured it might work this way.. it's saying it's 100mbps now so I'm gonna go this route and ditch the hub but I still get the same error message.... what gives?
when I try to run the network setup wizard it just has an error on the desktop and tells me to set the network manually.. I tried doing it from my XP CD aswell.. same thing.. and for some reason in the 'local area connection properties' on the advanced tap my laptop has a checkbox option for ''allow other network users to connect to the internet through this computer" .. unfortunately my desktop doesn't have this option, so how am I supposed to set it up manually? I'm totally stuck here.. my desktop is just immune to being networked or something.. it won't share damnit..

you need to install windows internet connection sharing.
you can use a hub to connection them for that. But you can't connect the hub directly to your modem and expect it to work for both computers. You would need your modem setup to assisgn 2 seperate ip's. Either that or you need a router instaid of a hub.
Anyways windows comes with this system, it should be under add / remove programs and windows something or other then networking.

It will be a lot more easy and efficient with a wired or wireless router. I prefer a Linksys or a D-Link
