Can't setup router

June 8, 2009 at 11:25:09
Specs: Macintosh Os X
I have a dlink dgl 4300 router, and I am having trouble
setting it up. I am trying to set it up for use with an
xbox, so I can play games online. I have a
preexisting setup of a dsl modem, connected solely to
an airport express. Whenever I plug the modem into
the router, the computers can detect the network, but
can't connect to it. When I troubleshoot the xbox, it
says the xbox can't find the IP. As a person with a
very limited knowledge of network, I would really
appreciate a step by step analysis of what I am doing
wrong. Thank you very much!

Do you have the routers manual and did you follow it for the access and setup of the router?

yes I did. Apparently, from the manual, you're supposed to
be able to log into the router from the computer. There are
two problems I have that don't enable me to do this. First, I
don't think it works with a mac. Second, since the modem
only has one slot for the router, if I plug in the new router, I
have to disconnect the airport express. And since I don't
have the internet, I can't troubleshoot from there. Just to
clarify, It used to work. Back then I had the modem
connected to a belkin network switch, which connected to
the router, and a regular airport. This seemed to work fine.
But when the internet started to not work, my dad
disconnected the airport and network switch, so that I had
only the setup I mentioned above.
