Comment:

I have two machines (one running Win XP Pro & the other Win98se) that I can't get to recognize each other on my home network. Everything was working fine when both machines were running Win98se, but when I upgraded one to WinXP, I was never able to get the machines to find each other again.

Both machines are connected to a hub. I have given both the same workgroup name. Everything is set up the exact way I had it before when everything was working. I'm guessing I'm not configuring XP right? I've used the Network Setup Wizard under XP 10 times to no avail. It goes through to the end and shows the network connection as functional, but neither machine shows up in the other's workgroup. I am not running any kind of firewall or anything.

Help GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

well its seems like you have not created a guest account in Windows XP. To do this goto control panel and computer management and create a guest account in users and accounts. then make sure the IP addresses of both the machines you have are in same subnet or give them ip like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 OK. It should work fine. moreover share the drives in my computer in windows XP. if all fails then try the command : ping 192.168.0.1 and ping 192.168.0.2 from each machine at the command prompt and after giving these ip addresses or replace the addresses with the ones you are having. make sure to keep the subnet same in both machines : 255.255.255.0
Ok

You don't need to activate the Guest account in XP. Once you see the computers and try to access the XP computer from the SE computer, you should be prompted for a password if it's going to be required.

You should definitely look into the IP settings as Anmol Bedi recommends.

Just curious, Ammol Bedi, why should you activate or create a guest acount? I don't even understand why you would need to have one.

If you ran the wizard you have to turn off Firewall in XP.

If your using Windows XP professional, create a WindowsXP Username for the user working
on the Windows98 system. Use Windows XP User Management to create a username and password to be used to logon on the Windows98 system.

You can use any Username and password to connect to Windows XP Home Edition, but you MUST define a username (and password, if required) to logon (if you select on the Windows98 "Enter Network Password" to "Cancel" or press the "ESC-key", then you did NOT logon to the network and can NOT use the network ! ) Go to this web site and it should help you. Best of luck.
