cant set up network between 2 pcs

CPU/Ram: P4 3ghz / 1024MB

ive set up a network via ethernet cable, but it says cable disconnected.

any ideas why? 1 pc has new pci netwrk card and 1 pc has network slot but not on its own card (motherboard) the slot located near where the keyboard and mouse go

When you are trying to connect two PCs directly together, you need to use a cross-over/cross connect cable, not a regular ethernet cable. Your other option is to put a hub in between the machines.
