Subject: Can't see networked computers?
OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon XP 2100 / 512
Comment:
I have NetBios over TCP/IP enabled on all 3 computers and associated network cards, all computers are a member of the same workgroup (MSHOME), I am able to ping the IPs of the other computers. (All the file sharing wizzards were used too)

I'm even able to access remote files through my xbox ( i have a modded xbox, long story ), so I know the network and all settings are in tact, but I just cannot acces them from my computer !

They don't show up in "My Network Places" nor in "View workgroup computers." They have in the past, it seems completely random that they don't show up.

They're all running Win XP Pro, my comptuer is an ICS hub sharing a cable connection to them all with a static IP for the gateway.

Does anyone know what might be causing the computers to refuse to show up in my network places?

Maybe you don't have the Computer Browser service turned on. Maybe you are not using 3 unique computer names. Maybe a name has a leading or trailing blank. One person reported trouble like this because of the computer description being too long.

Likely, the computers are just playing with your mind. I've had similar results, or should I say non-results, with a working network. Restart each computer, and try View Workgroup Computers again. Repeat a second time if necessary. Be patient.

Well, don't be too patient. Also try Start - Run - \\IPaddr - OK where IPaddr is one of the other computer's IP address. Should bring up a window showing all the shares of that computer. If it works try it again but use the computer name rather than IPaddr. My theory is that this helps Network Places get its act together.

Please let us know which part(s) of this work and which don't.

Terry

Terry... thanks a lot.

the //IPaddr worked. I knew what I basically needed was the shortcut to the files (and the only way I knew how to get that was from My Network Places), becasue the settings were intact and functional.

After doing that, they showed up in My Net Places too !

Excellent advice, thanks for the help.
