This is a laptop I am working on for a friend. Norton internet security was on the machine. The subscriptions were expired. I had to use a special utility program from norton that I had to download from them because it would not install otherwise because it told me I had to log in but would not give me the option to log in because the subscription had expired. Now when I reboot the computer it has no internet connection. I tried renewing the IP address (which right now is showing as 169.254.70.57 subnet 255.255.0.0) and it tells me that it cannot renew. I have uninstalled the network card drivers and reinstalled them. I have tried disconnecting the network cord and resetting the router. I have 6 computers on this network and the other 5 are still working fine (hence this post =p ) I know I have to be overlooking something really simple. Anyone able to give me a hand?

does your router have a built in firewall? if so y do have internet security on your pc? it will only cause conflicts if u have a hardware and software firewall.uninstall norton security.this will definitly be the problem.its blocking your communication with your router.once uninstalled try pinging the router and the network card.o better still b4 u uninstall it disable the firewall and then try to ping your router.but the problem is definitly with norton.i doubt its your hardware

When I ping the router it says destination host unreachable.

When I do ipconfig /release it comes up with that same IP address of
169.254.70.57 subnet 255.255.0.0

I cannot get it to release

When I do ipconfig /renew it comes up with:

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

So, what now? Any ideas?

u will not be able to talk to the router if u have a 169 address.this is an address automatically configured by your card when a DHCP is not presentbecause your pc cannot talk to the router it will not be able to renew the address.do a loopback test on the card Ping 127.0.0.1 to test the connectivity of the card.if no replys the card will more than likely be faulty.start 1st by uninstalling the norton security software and then reinstalling the drivers for the card and then try to connect to the router...(without norton being installed) do you have WEP enabled?? are u using encryption on your network?

A 169.254.y.z IP address is an automatic private IP address that the computer has assigned itself because it cannot get one from the DHCP server. If you are using a router, the most common fix is resetting the router (the computer should be off if the computer is not Windows XP or Windows 2000). If this does not fix then there are several possibilities:

1. Some software on the computer is blocking the computer's ability to pick up an IP address. Usually this is a firewall, so I would recommend disabling any firewall software that you may have installed on the computer before going any further.

2. There is a problem with the NIC and/or drivers. Uninstalling and reinstalling the NIC will usually resolve this problem. Note: A good way to determine if this is the cause of the problem is to connect the computer to another device that assigns an IP address, i.e. a cable/dsl modem or another router. If the computer is still unable to pick up an IP address there is definately a problem with the computer or NIC or the network cable (check/replace cable).

3. I have also found the the System Restore and System File Checker utilities will sometimes fix this problem.

4. Another common problem is with the firewall software. Sometimes disabling is not enough. Uninstall the software to see if it can then pick up an IP address. If it does, try reinstalling the firewall software. If you, again, can not pick up an IP address then there may be a problem, otherwise it was a problem with the firewall software.

"An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket." this is a Winsock error message, try re-installing Winsock following the instructions found at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811259
