We purchased a computer with the XP os installed on it. Days later, we purchased the D-Link DI-604 router to hook this and another computer with WIN2000. The win2000 worked fine right off the bat...the XP has been a source of frustration and hair pulling ever since. I have checked the configuration repeatedly.
Among other things I have disabled the firewall, assigned ip's, (rebooted between every change made) pinged ip, no response. The network card works fine, the cable is a straight thru cable, that was tested also. I have pinged and pinged and it still comes back 169.xxx.... I also uninstalled the Norton Antivirus program.
Its been a week of hell with this machine, after talking to 3 technical support representives with DLink and my ISP, I am no closer to a solution. I am not the most experienced in this arena but I have tried to do my research (including scouring this forum for items I may have missed) and this is my last resort.
Thanks in advance for any help generously given.

just so you know, when you have an ip that starts with 169, it means it couldn't contact a dhcp server. you couldn't ping the router because your ip range wasn't the same (192.168.0.x).
I have the DI-614+, so I don't know if yours has a dhcp server or not, etc...glad to see you fixed it
