I've tried "ping loopback" and also pinging the address I get from ipconfig. Neither works. I'm running Win2kpro. Is this symptom something that might be caused by a worm/trojan/bot?

anything's possible, but that's not very likely.
I assume you're typing "ping loopback" at a command prompt? If so, you probably meant to type "ping localhost". Try that and see if you get better results.
Also, what IP address did you get from ipconfig?

Do you have a firewall? Router? It might be blocking pings

if you are pinging yourself at 127.0.0.1 and not getting a responce then the NIC may be bad or drivers not installed correctly. i would reload all drivers. if that doesnt work then try another card....
I can't ping myself (using 127.0.0.1 nor the IP-address returned by ipconfig: 192.168.0.2) but I can ping another pc, which is connected to the internet.
So surfing is not a problem but the problem I'm facing is that windows doesn't find the other pc.
