I am having a problem that I can't figure out to save my life. I have seven users using a 310i webramp to get onto the internet. On this small lan everyone can get to our main website except one user. He just received a new laptop and can connect to every other site I've tested except our website. The thing that gets me, is that he cannot ping our web server, or mail server. He can ping yahoo, Microsoft, Google but cannot ping anything behind our firewall. It isn't like he doesn't have access because six other users with the same settings can access the site. They are using nat translation from the isp. Any help would be truly appreciated.

Ping doesn't require any authentication. It doesn't use any osrt of Microsoft client, so that's not the issue at this point.

It sounds to me like you've plugged him in outside the router. Check his connection, even swap the computer with a known good computer, reboot, and see what happens. A laptop is easy, because all you have to do is drop it on someone's desk, and plug in the network connection. Chances are, it'll work from there, and that will prove the point.

Chase

Unfortunately, I have tried this to no avail. I moved him to one of the known good locations and still couldn't ping the web server or mail server. I also sent out a brand new laptop thinking it might be something corrupt and the fastest solution was to get his current laptop back to troubleshoot. This didn't work however, The newer laptop did the same thing.
I have this same configuration and about 6 different locations and everyone else has no problem getting into the pix firewall. Even the other people at his location. This particular person was using a dialup connection before he was connecting through this lan and had no problem getting his mail or hitting the website. Thanks for all your input, I appreciate it.

OK. Next...

What OS are you running? A friend of mine had an extremely similar problem. His ME machine wouldn't run TCP/IP. He also had NetBEUI installed, and the file/print sharing was working using that, so we knew the network and NIC's were all good. In the end, we reloaded the system to get TCP/IP to work. Now, he's only got TCP/IP. All the other protocols are removed.

So, if you've got ME, you may be forced to reload to fix it.

God luck,
Chase

He is running Windows 98 Se. I tried tracert to our location and the request times out on first hop. I want to think it has something to do with the route because every other location comes up fine. But, 6 other users who are going through the same connection are fine.
He has a xircom pcmcia card that gets all the ip info from the dhcp (Webramp) and gets on to the network and gets to all other sites and he also has a 3com nic in a docking station that does the same. Everything works properly except the fact that he can't get to the mail server, and website.

Do you ping the local machines using IP addresses or system names?

If you're using the IP addresses, then I'm at a loss. I'd need to get hands-on to figure it out.

If you're using system names, try the IP address. If it works, then it's a resolution problem, and is pretty easily fixed.

Good luck,
Chase

I am using Ip Addresses and I am at a loss too. Unfortunately, I have to troubleshoot this over the phone because the location is 2 states away. I will try to recreate this situation when he sends me back one of the laptops but you know how difficult that usually works. I will use the same Isp dialup account and type of webramp and see if I can connect from my office. I hope I can figure out something out. Thanks for all your input

Well, there's one more possibility.

Have the user run "route -print" from a command line. It may list two 0.0.0.0 (or world) routes.

If there's two, then that's your problem.

Have the user read to you the two lines, and determine which one is actually supposed to be the connection he/she's using on the network. Then run "route delete 0.0.0.0"

That will kill both routes. That why he/she needs to read them to you.

Then, have the user enter;
"route add 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ip.ad.dre.ss"
with the ip address being the correct one for that network.

Now, try to ping something. If it works, then you need to find out where the second route is coming from, and fix that.

HTH,
Chase

I called the user this morning and he was able to logon and hit our site and mail server with no problems. I asked him if he noticed anything different, like someone who is normally logged on who isn't. He said there was a user who is typically in the office who is out today. I wonder if this could be the issue.
