Can't ping can browse

Specs: Windows XP
I am working on a client computer trying to get her access to a server, and her system can't seem to see it, or many other servers for that matter.

When I open the command prompt and try to ping the target server (a local server in my office) it resolves the URL into an IP address but then it times out on every attempt. It also does this when I try to ping big websites like or (yes I know it is a game site, but there are millions of World players so I figure the server is a good one to test with). However when I direct the clients browser to the websites mentioned above, it connects and displays the web sites normaly.

Has anyone got any idea why this might be? I have never encountered this circumstance before, only the oposite where you can ping but can't browse.

Many thanks for your help.

YOU KNOW the connection is OK!!!

It is working, why bother with ping????????????????????????????

You need to work on ports and firewalls and nat and routers.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
