Can you ping the Vista machine?

Make sure there is no firewall blocking on computer and XP can ping Vista and vice-versa. Also you need to enable file sharing correctly on computers, here are some articles to help you:

Simple file sharing in XP

Share file with user/group permission in XP Pro

Hope it helps..
