cant make network connection

Specs: Windows XP, Intel Celeron 331
hello I have win xp. I reinstalled it on the same servise pack and I installed all drivers corecctly, after that one driver was not installed, this driver was named "unknowen device", I cant understand what driver was not installed, after that I wanted to make a network between two computer but I cant ,on the other computer there were all drivers installed but on my computer one driver was not installed so I cant make network between two this computers because of "unknowen device"
so after that I find the motherboard driver disk and with it I make chipset update and for my surprise this "unknowen device" was installed and all drivers were ok.and i made network conecction sucessfully.
well, please I want to understand what is the reason that I cant make network connection before there was not installed chipset??

You answered your own question. You never really had the driver installed for the on board chipset, until you found the mother board CD.
