Can't log on to Internet, but others can

December 27, 2009 at 08:20:58
Specs: Windows XP Pro, Core 2 Duo/4GB

In the past few days, I've noticed that my son will be logged onto the Internet, playing away at his favorite online game (no telling what that might be). However, if I try to log onto the Internet, I am unable to. It's interesting to note that I can't log on to the Internet via my wired connection to our router, but I've found that I can log on from my laptop, which is wireless. Note that I'm using the fastest DSL service that's available from AT&T and I have a Westell modem/router. The Westell device has four ports and is also wireless capable. Each of our desktop computers are wired connections to the Westell device. My son's OS is the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Pro, and all of our other computers have the XP Pro OS. The laptop I used to log on with (when I couldn't from my desktop) is using the 64-bit edition of XP Pro, but all the other XP Pro installations are 32-bit. Might you have an idea as to why he is able to access and use the Internet and I can't when both systems are hard-wired to the modem/router?

What does the connection in your Network Places show? How about ipconfig? Have you tried using another cable? What errors do you receive?

I don't receive any errors, per se. Right now, my son is not on the Internet and I'm not experiencing any of the problems I discussed in my description of the problem. The only error I receive, if it can be called that, is that it's as though I can't connect to the Internet and I finally get the message that says that the webpage cannot be displayed. It's as though I'm being blocked by the router, but I've confirmed by viewing the router's setup with my laptop that nothing "appears" to be blocking access from my desktop computer.

I will wnen the failure occurs again. I wasn't in a position that I could answer your questions because it wasn't failing at the time, not has it failed since...
