Hello guys i will be happy if someone could finally help me. I have a linksys router connecting 2 xp pro machines which have cable internet, the internet works fine on both machines. My problem is that somehow i created a Connection along with my LAN connection that is called "Internet Gateway". The speed of this connection is much slower than my lan connectyion. If i disable thsi connection, then my internet doesnt work, so i have to keep it enabled. Did i do something in windows to create this connection, and is there somewhere in xp where i can get rid of it and just connect with my LAN connection. Do u think it may have been this program called WinGate that did this, because i downloaded it once and played aorund with it, if so can someone tell me what to do in Wingate to get rid of it, thank you

Try unistalling WinGate and see if the icon disappears. You don't need WinGate AND a Linksys router (they both do the same thing). Then verify the remaining Connection is set to obtain and IP (DHCP) and that it gets an IP from the Linksys box.

Click Start, then click Network Connections. Right click the connection you attach your modem to and select Properties.

Under This connection uses the following items: double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

click both Obtain an IP... and Obtain DNS...
then click OK, then OK again, then close network connections.

To verify that you are receiving an IP:
Start, run and type cmd then press Enter. at the command prompt, type ipconfig then press Enter.
You should see something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Desktop>ipconfig

Windows XP IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter something:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : cisco.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The default gateway will be the IP of the Linksys router.

If you do not receive an address (your address shows as 0.0.0.0) then you have other issues.

actually it has to do with UPNP. This automatically detects your router. Go into your router setup and disable upnp option.

No way to disable UPNP on a Linksys hombre. Perhaps you mean on the XP box, in Services, right?

Highly unlikely that Universal Plug and Play created an Connection for the router. I've got a few networks with Linksys and XP that have never experienced this phenomenon.

If vince had some documentation on this I would gladly look into it.

I have the linksys befw11s4 with firmware 1.42.7, the option is under passwords. Whenever I enable UPNP, a internet gateway appear in my connections folder and every computer connect to my router, Until Upnp is disabled in the router.

Upgrade your firmware.

I have the same problem with 3 XP machines on a linksys router. The XP machines attempt to take over the internet connection and act as a gateway for internet access. Thus, it will take the IP address away from the router and act as the internet source. I'm going to check the UPNP settings tonight and remove that service. Great thread, helped me a lot
