can't get more than 1mbps speed from a 802.11

Specs: Windows XP
my adsl router(bsnl dna-a211-i) is connected with my desktop by ethernet cord(100mbps) and i am connecting my laptop(11g)(asus eee 4g) with the router(11g) wirelessly. whatever the theoritical speed is i am getting only 1mbps bandwidth in this lan with no firewall or sequrity setup. Internet surfing is not a problem but transferring large files is really a headache. the distance from the laptop and the router is approx 3-3.5 m and signal strength is excellent. So I don't think distance is a problem here. Can any body tell me how to increase this band width? Thanks in advance

for comparison, what is you throughput speed if wired connection with the laptop?

how are you determining 1mbps throughput?
