I've got a Win 98 pc that's normally part of a 3-pc network connected by a 4 port router/switch. I have cable internet service. I was unable to get the internet on this 1 pc when connected to the network, but the other 2 were fine. I could access any of the other pc's file systems from the problem pc and vice versa, but not the internet or email. I thought the problem was with the router. But I connected the cable modem directly to this problem pc and still can't get connected. I do get an ip address from the modem. I've checked the TCP/IP settings and they're the same as the other pc's. I tried removing TCP/IP and reinstalling. Still no go. I'm stumped! Any ideas? Thanks, Chip

Since you can see the other computers in the network TCP/IP must be working ok, unless you have another protocol installed. If you do, remove the other protocol and see if you can still see the other computers with TCP/IP only. Could be an Explorer problem. Did you try the Internet connection Wizard? You might have to re-install IE.

or even simplier maybe your cat5 cable is messed up =p it can happen u know =)

I think JMW has the right idea. TCP/IP is working it's just that your browser is not set up to access the net through the LAN properly. Run the IE connection wizard again and choose 'connect through LAN'. Jimbo

Thanks for the responses. I do have another protocol, NetBEUI. When setting up the network I couldn't communicate with the other pc's until I installed it. I'll see what happens if I uninstall it. I tried the Internet Connection Wizard and got an error "Failed to load the Internet Connection wizard helper component". Any ideas on that one? Chip

This seems to be a problem with the internet connection wizard. Run Iwcoobe.exe to reset the internet connection. Phil
