i have a d link(model di 704p) router (wired)
that will not let me access the internet. when i hook up my cable modem strait to the computer i am able to get on. but when i conect the modem to the router i get nothing. I can access the router, printer, and other computers fine but no internet. i called d link and they went through everyting with me. they were able to determine that the router was seeing the internet but my computer was not. they said that there must be some soft ware running on my computer that is blocking it. probably a firewall software. the said that the router acts as a fire wall and when you have a firewall software running at the same time the will conflict with eachother and make it imposible to get on line. is this true? I removed the only firewall software i knew of but got this computer used. i am not sure if any of the previous programs might be conflicting with the router. the only programs in my uninstal list are,

I can't see where any of the software that your listing would cause any problems but I would put the comcast software under suspect.

Are you getting a Default Gateway from your computer?

From a DOS/command prompt type in;

winipconfig

press enter. This IP for the Default Gateway should be the IP address of your router. This is the path that will let you get out on the net.

Have you contacted your ISP? They may need to register the MAC address of your router (it's probably printed on the router).

If you can get to their web site using dial-up, direct connect, or another computer, then you'll probably find instructions on their help/support page.

D-Link's support should have known this.

Its prolly got nothing to do with the mac. The only mac address your isp needs to know about is of a cable modem or dsl modem. Technically those are routers but a dlink router wont have any effect.

the defalt is correct, it is the ip of the router.

the router is set to clone the mac address of the computer

i was reading through an old fourm post subject"file sharing ok but no internet" posted june 03,2002
in this post they asked
"If you can ping your router can you ping past the router to another IP.
Try 66.218.71.113 That is Yahoo.com

If you can ping that then try to ping the DNS "ping yahoo.com"

If you can ping the IP but not the domain name then your DNS is not working properly."

well i can ping the 66.218.71.113 but not yahoo.com.

if this is a dns problem i am having then what do i need to have my computer dns set as. right now it is set "disable dns"

The router is not forwarding DNS request correctly, or the DNS server is not accepting request from your router. Try the following.

Power off the modem, router and system(s) and leave them powered off over night (power them off by 11:30pm). The next day power on the modem and let it sync up. Wait a few minutes and then power up the router. Wait, then last power up the system. Then see if you can ping the router and their DNS. If so try to connect.

Try RUN IPCONFIG and click More info and check the DNS IP shown, it should be correct for your ISP. Check the DHCP Server IP address, it should be from the router (192.168.1.1). If all is correct at your end, then call the ISP support desk and tell them you can ping the DNS (Domain Name Server) but can not access the Internet. Let them diagnose the problem. After they start mention the router. They may have to reconfigure your profile so it works.
