this once minor problem with my dsl modem is now turning into a major one. my dsl modem (Speedstream 5100) hasn't been working correctly with my computer for weeks now. My ISP is SBC Yahoo DSL. For a while now, my modem would constantly reset itself when it connected to my computer for some reason and would connect every blue moon. At first, I suspected it was something wrong with the modem, because i checked all the settings on my computer and got technical help with SBC. However, I had connected it to my Sony Plystation 2 and it worked perfectly without any problems. I then suspected it to be the computer. When SBC came out to check it personally, they connected the modem to their computer and it worked. They also suggested it was the computer and told me to delete spyware, check the firewall, etc. I believe I have tried everything I could think of but it just would not work no matter how hard I tried. Can anyone think of what could be on my computer, (virus, worm, program) that could be doing this other than a normal program such as a firewall? If so, this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

are you running a firewall? is it going through a router? What spyware remaval tools have you used? Are there any error messages, etc?

yes i am running a firewall. windows firewall but it knows the connection exists. as for spyware removal, i usually use sysweeper. the only error messages that occur are the "page can"t be displayed" when i am trying to access the modem's ip address and "can not get a connection" for AOL.

i am currently not using a router. the dsl modem is connected directly to the computer.

Also, i have noticed another thing. sometimes if I connect my router to the computer (by itself, not with the modem connected to it.) i sometimes cant even get it ip adress so i know it must be something with the computer.

You can manually set your computer's network connection to 100Mbps and see if that helps. Assuming your router has 100Mbps ports.

Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.
