I purchased the Netgear DG834G intergrated wireless ADSL modem/router/firewall. I have it linked up to my PC, and its connecting to the internet fine. I want to connect my sisters laptop so she can connect the internet too. She recently purchases this, and is new, and has a wireless net card in it. Think its only 802.11b. When I try and search for a wireless network on the laptop it is finding nothing
I have named the SSID on the pc, and set the channel and country. I have no ecryption enabled. I set the settings on the laptop as the same SSID, same channel country. But it still is not finding a network..
The device is transmitting a wireless signal, and appears to be all working at the routers end.
It is rather frustrating, I have been fiddling with different settings trying to get it to work, but nothing is working yet.
Could someone please help me?
BTW the laptop is beside the wirelss router, so it surely cant be something with the signal not reaching etc.

Back away from the router. You're too close. You should be across the room. The antennas are usually omni-directional, emminating out from the source. You'll get a better connection across the room.
I don't think this will fix your problem, though.
Does the laptop indicate any connection? Wireless technology is still in the developement stages and some hardware are still not compatible, regardless of the a,b,or g designation.
Try starting over by hard resetting your router, then rebooting your laptop.

OK, today I got my new apple G4 powerbook. Turned it on and all, and awed and its sexyness. Went to find a network, and viola, it just found it right away. Works no problem!!!
However the laptop XP, aint.. lol Maybe its compatible issue.. How would I find out exactly what wireless card is in the laptop? And how would i replace it/take it out?

Right click My Computer, left click Properties, select the hardware tab, left click Device Manager, left click the + sign beside Network adapter, and that should tell you what you have. Or...
Go to manufacturer's website, enter model and serial number, select specifications. The website should also tell you if there are any updated drivers for your wireless card.

It doesnt really say what it is. All it says is;
"IEEE 802.11 b mini PCI wirless network adapter"
Ive looked around the net for other drivers but aint had
much luck. I dont really know what manufactureer it is.
The CD that has the drivers on it, which came with my
sisters laptop, has got various drivers for the wireless
card. Ive tried installing all of the drivers on that CD, but
still nothing, I also tried windows update to see if it could
find any updated drivers. But that didn't work either.Any ideas?
Thanks

I have the same problem.
SMC 2804WBR G router, P1.4(WinXP Pro) on Wired LAN, P3.2(WinXP Home) on SMC2862W-G Adapter, and a Centrino Laptop(WinXP Pro) with Intel WG2200.The USB SMC2862W-G adapter connects fine from the 2nd floor, and my router is in the basement. But my laptop 3 meters away from router doesnt see the network.
Funny thing is that sometimes WinXP says "One or more wireless networks found" But when I click to view the networks there is nothing. :/
I updated firmware on router, reinstalled drivers on the laptop and still nothing.
