can't do much - not even watch tv

April 2, 2009 at 23:26:38
Specs: Windows XP
My internet connection is so slow that i can't do anything at all (I'll waited more than 10 minutes for this website to come up, and i'll be lucky if it posts). I use my computer for everything -- from running my business to watching TV (I don't have a television, so I stream most of my shows). I posted earlier today, but haven't gotten much help. I've dedicated more than 3 days of my work to this problem, and I need help ASAP, or I'll lose even more money.

The deal is, in trying to secure my computer from intrusions such as the conficker thing, my cousin changed my settings so that it's almost impossible to bring up anything online. My connection is good, my signal is excellent, and somtimes things work fine -- but then, it'll slow down to a halt. I have probably "repaired" my wireless connection 48 times today (I do it about every 3 minutes). Things usually are OK for about 30 seconds after I click repair, and then it's slow again

I'm convinced that my cousin changed some setting in Windows that is making it impossible to get online.

ANY advice is appreciated. I just need to know where to start. LIke I've said, I've tried everything I can think of for three days straight, and ever minute is another $X lost. Please help.

I highly recommend you get your cousin over and have him undo what all he did.

If you have a SOHO router between you and your internet connection, that will provide most of the security you need to be "safe" on the internet. You would also want a good antivirus program and one or two antispyware programs. Run scans with the antispyware once or twice and week and keep your AV updated and you'll be about as safe as one can get.
