can't dial out

Hi there, been geeting really frustrated with win98 comm ports(spare pc). I can't get the conexant modem/driver to dial out. With plug and play enabled in bios, the stupid o/s is giving the modem comm1, which as far as im aware is already taken by the ps/2 mouse, hence the freeze up's every time i try to dial out. When i disable plug and play, the modem appears on comm5, which still doesnt work. I dont know anything about IRQ's and i dont know how to configure the comm ports. All i know is the modem usually goes to comm3, the problem is getting it there. Please, someone help before this pc goes through the window, cheers guys: regards ~tosh~
