my old pc is a client and has connected through lan. when i open the Network connection, i see the Lan network icon has connected, the icon turns blue and its receiving signal. but when i open IE, it just says cannot display the page. the old pc is using winxp. how do i fix it?

it was fine before. this old pc used win98, and when i just plug the Lan cable in and the internet was connected without setup. i could just open the IE and i got a webpage. now i cant. whats wrong?

Some more info would be helpful.
1) Is this PC connected to a SOHO router which in turn connects to the internet?
2) Do you have more than one PC connected to the router (assuming "yes" to first question)?
3) Is the SOHO router (again, assuming "yes" to Q1) giving out IP's to the clients via DHCP?
If you have more than one PC plugged into a DHCP enabled router, then open a command prompt window on the problem PC and on one that's working properly and then type the following command:
ipconfig /all
Compare all settings. The DNS and Gateway IP's being the most important here. They should be identical on all PC's within your LAN (only the actual IP addresses should differ and they should all be within the same subnet). If they're not, then that's the problem.
