Can't Connect to the Internet

I hooked up a Network for a friend about 3 months ago, with a linksys router going though a cable modem and everything worked great. Now they can no longer get connected with one of the PC's (one will, one won't). So I unhooked the one (that won't connect) from the router and hooked it directly to the cable modem and still no luck. I found several spywares, but haven't found any viruses Yet. After both scans, I will try it with my cable modem and a different Cat cable. As far as I know, nothing has changed in the configuration and the "Firewall" is disabled. Is there anything I might be missing??? Changing the network card will be a Real Issue, it's on a Gateway "Profile" which is all buit together in the bottom of the monitor.... Thanks Rick A.

Have you tried renewing the IP address (I assume it's set to obtain an IP address automatically)? Go to Start > Run, type in CMD and press enter. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /release and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and press enter. To see the current IP address, type ipconfig and press enter.

Yes, it's set up to obtain an IP address automatically, which it will for the cable modem, but should it be for the router or does it matter???

Your router should be running DHCP which assigned IP addresses automatically. Is your IP address in the range of 192.168.x.x? That's a typical home network IP range.

On the bad client, go into Command Prompt and type in netstat -a and see if you have a gateway and an IP Address. You probably don't because you can't connect. Still at the command prompt ping 127.0.0.1: This is the address of the network adapter and if you can ping this your NIC is probably OK. If not it may have died on you.
MAKE SURE the firewall is turned off: Just because you didn't enable it doesn't mean someone else didn't either. Run an up-to-date AV scanner and a spyware remover to make sure this stuff isn't messing up your system. You say you've already checked your TCP/IP properties but check them again.

After scanning the PC (found 40 viruses & 90 spywares), it still doesn't work. I have tried a new Cat5, it was a different modem, I can ping the network adapter (127.0.0.1) can't ping anything else, removed the IP address and let it obtain one automatically. But the IP address is always the same and the first part is like a R21@********.com. Never seen that before, Mine doesn't do that, but mine works... Any more ideas???? Thanks Rick A.
